Watercolor Portrait of Young Cavalier, Rare Shadow Box/Gilt Frame Signed 1904

This watercolor portrait of a 17th Century young male in cavalier hat and Elizabethan Victorian lace ruffled collar is by artist Leafy (Olefa) F. (Forest) Buckman (b Illinois, July 19, 1884, d August 11, 1952). The Buckman family dates back to the 1700s. Leafy’s mother and father were born in 1841 and 1861, respectively, and died the same year, 1924; possibly as a residual result of the Spanish flu epidemic. She was the middle sibling between two brothers.

My research led to corresponding with a living relative, a great nephew. According to him, Leafy - a recluse spinster who lived in a β€˜makeshift’ house near Farmingdale, Illinois - was the great aunt to his mother, whose father was Leafy’s brother. As the great nephew’s mother recalled, in her youth Leafy was said to be very beautiful. One day an intruder broke into Leafy’s home and tried to attack her with a sharp knife or scissors. Although unharmed, it was felt this contributed to Leafy’s reclusiveness. The great nephew speculates that this portrait could be a self-portrait of Leafy imagined as a young man. The β€˜young cavalier’ does have facial features that are reminiscent of Leafy, the nose especially, large eyes, and shape of the jaw. A cousin, Sally Mae Buckman ended up with many of Leafy’s possessions. It is a mystery how the painting ended up in Florida where it was brought to the Pacific Northwest.
