In the final rest stop scene of “Five Easy Pieces” movie (even though it was Vancouver Island) it could have easily been somewhere between Tacoma and Seattle. This is what the area looked like in the 1960s, 1970s and still in the early 1980s. Now that your mind is wrapped around that, picture the many PNW artists like Jack D. Westlin, who taught pottery or painting and lived in relative obscurity. Their only glory was creating and passing on their knowledge to their students. Jack Westlin besides being a coach taught ceramics at Stadium High School.
You know, the school featured in the Heath Ledger movie, “Ten Things I Hate About You”. Westlin probably taught in the 1970s and 1980s at Stadium. Jack was a graduate of University of Puget Sound and some biographies say he studied with F. Carlton Ball. I believe he met his wife there. Carlton Ball also taught at Tacoma Community College, so maybe Westlin met him there. Gosh, Mr Westlin’s work stands on its own really. His handling of glaze is impressive. His whimsical design is VERY much in keeping with the time period aesthetic for production ware. This is hand thrown. It’s not a Peter Voulkos or Rudy Autio. Westlin doesn’t come from the world of Archie Bray in Montana. Jack represents the common guy.
