Signed Lithograph Print "Warmed by the View" by Stephen Lyman (1992) #5826/8500 37" W x 32" H

Experience the serene beauty of nature with this stunning framed limited edition signed print titled "Warmed by the View." Capturing a moonlit campfire scene atop a snowy cliff, this artwork features warm embers that illuminate the tranquil night, inviting warmth and comfort into any room. Beautifully matted and framed, it is a timeless piece that blends perfectly with home decor in Tacoma and Olympia.

Although he is well known as a painter of both wilderness and wildlife, perhaps a more accurate description of Stephen Lyman is “naturalist artist.” He is an explorer who specializes in painting the most elusive moments in nature. His is inspiring work, inspired in turn by the writings and teachings of famous naturalist John Muir.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings,” John Muir said,” Lyman relates. “I know exactly what he meant.” Lyman’s love of the great outdoors stems from his childhood in the Pacific Northwest, where hiking in Snake River country was a regular family ritual.

Stephen knew early in life that he was an artist. The desire to share his admiration for the outdoors was strong, but he enrolled in the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California, to learn more about the commercial art field. Although he started his career as an illustrator for a large Los Angeles studio, he soon realized that the call of the wild was stronger than the lure of the city.

So he returned to Idaho and spent two years exploring and painting. Since that time he has continued to discover the wonders of the natural world and of living a wilderness lifestyle. His adventures bring more to his art, which is based on his experiences and perceptions of being in the wilderness. “All my paintings are based on my experience and perception of being in the wilderness,” Stephen Lyman says.

Lyman has been sharing the wonder of the natural world with a growing legion of collectors since 1983, when his first limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop. He has been a regular participant in the annual by-invitation-only show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, and was named “Artist of the Year” by the Snake Lake Nature Center Foundation for the 1991 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show.

Warmed by the View
The question everyone will ask on viewing this image is, “Who would build a campfire that close to a cliff?” The answer is “I would.” I’m very comfortable at edges of cliffs. I don’t pick usual camp sites. I very rarely camp in areas where other people have camped before. Usually, camp sites are sheltered areas that are level and comfortable to walk around in. I camp where I can enjoy where I am. I like to climb. I like high places. And I’ve camped here. I’ve actually looked at my campfire in this location from this angle.

I made a conscious decision to make this image different from the other two campfire prints, A Mountain Campfire and Embers at Dawn. It’s not the same size. The season is different. You’re not looking at it in the same way. I’ve placed this campfire in a larger landscape. My approach this time was to see the campfire’s place in the environment around it. It’s not like you’re sitting there warming your hands, as in the other two. You’re on the next ridge over, looking across the gap.

It’s eleven at night. The campfire is a radiant source of light, illuminating the area around the camp, while the entire area is lit by the moonlight as well. This effect was particularly fun to do.
